The beginnings of chillout music
The origins of chillout can be traced back to the UK through the post-punk band The Durutti Column, which became a forerunner of the genre in the 1980s. In 1990 KLF released an album entitled "Chill Out." Later in the 1990s, many compilations appeared that had the word Chillout in the title and were associated head on with downtempo and trip hop trends. In 2000, slower varieties of house, nu-jazz, psybient or lounge music were incorporated into the genre.

Lounge
Lounge music is a collective term for music derived from jazz music. It is an offshoot of popular music from the 1950s and 1960s, encompassing genres such as exotica, easy listening and space age pop genres. This music was (and often still is) performed mainly in bars and hotel casinos to create a specific atmosphere. It is designed to create in the listener the impression of "being in a place" of a jungle, paradise island, outer space, etc. other than where he or she actually is. It includes instrumental performances but also modern electronic music. The earliest it appeared in sundry farmhouses between 1920 and 1930, and as already mentioned, it is mainly associated with bars and casinos. The most popular performers were the legendary Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, who played between 1930 and 1940, along with similar artists such as Bobby Darin, Jackie Gleason, Wayne Newton, Louis Prima, Sonny King and Sam Butera.
Lounge music is mostly performed (due to its original "bar-casino" use) by a piano or piano-playing vocalist and one or two accompanying musicians. Lounge music performers usually perform covers of popular pop tunes and all kinds of standards.
