Music video description

The song "Loser" is a track by American musician Beck, which was produced by Carl Stephenson and Tom Rothrock. The song was released as the artist's second single by the independent label "Bong Load Custom Records" in March 1993. When the song "Loser" began to appear on niche radio stations, its popularity began to grow, which eventually led to Beck signing a contract with DGC Records. The song was re-released in April 1994 and reached No. 10 on the famed US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It did equally well on the European charts, topping the charts in Norway, as well as the top ten charts in Australia, Austria, Canada, Iceland, New Zealand and Sweden. Eventually, the hit "Loser" was included on Beck's debut album titled "Mellow Gold."

Beck was a homeless musician in New York in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In early 1991, he returned to his hometown of Los Angeles and grabbed poorly paid jobs to survive. However, he was constantly looking for space to compose music and perform on the streets, in cafes and clubs. When he released the song "Loser," he gained popularity, and his life took a new course.

The song "Loser" topped the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll in 1994, and a decade later Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 203rd on its list of the 500 greatest hits of all time. In September 2010, Pitchfork Media magazine placed the song "Loser" at number 9 in its list of the 200th best songs of the 1990s. The video was directed by Beck's friend Steve Hanft, who asked the label for $300, which served as the shooting budget. When the artist signed a contract with Gaffen Records Hanft received another $14,000 for editing and mastering the video. It's also worth mentioning that the video was ranked sixth in the music video category in the 1994 Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll.
