Music video description
Billy Idol, or rather William Michael Albert Broad, is an uncommon figure. It's safe to say that the musician has always understood cultural trends and had an uncanny ability to pull in the crowds. The song White Wedding Part 1, released as the second single from the 1982 studio album White Wedding, is not one of Idol's most popular songs, but it is certainly recognizable and appreciated. Somewhat surprisingly, it often appears at weddings, although its subversive lyrics deal with sad and difficult moments.
The protagonist of Idol's somewhat depressing reflections is not, despite appearances, his younger sister. The "little sister" occurring in the lyrics comes from urban slang and is identical in meaning to the word "girl." Billy Idol sings that he loves a woman who is about to marry another man.
The video for the song White Wedding Part 1 was directed by David Mallet, who previously worked with Davidem Bowie and zespołem Queen. The musician reportedly did not have the cash to pay for the director's efforts, so he agreed to do his work for free. The resulting music video contributed to Idol's rise to fame. It features many interesting and strong meaningful elements, such as a motorcycle crashing through a church window and a ring made of barbed wire, which convey the tragedy of the whole situation.
