Music video description
"Video Killed The Radio Star" is a piece that Trevor Horn wrote shortly after reading a science fiction story about an opera singer who lived in a world without sound and was thus perceived as obsolete. At the time, the band's entire artistic concept The Buggles was based on the idea that everything in our everyday life is artificial, even music. So the band sings with a robotic voice, and all instruments are processed so that a computer effect can be heard.
The song was mixed and recorded in 1979 and was the band's debut single from the album "The Age of Plastic." Its reception was positive, with reviewers noting the unusual musical elements that diversified the somewhat pop sound. The single debuted at the top of sixteen international charts (including Australia, Japan and the UK, Canada, Germany and South Africa). However, it was not as popular in the United States.
The video for the song "Video Killed The Radio Star" was directed by Russel Mulcahy and was the first to be shown on MTV USA. It took place on August 1, 1981 at 12:01 a.m. The video was shot in south London in just one day. The girl who played the lead in it was a friend of the director strenuously trying to pursue an acting career.
