"I Will Always Love You" is a song written in 1973 by American singer Dolly Parton. The artist wanted to use it to say goodbye to her former partner and mentor Porter Wagoner shortly after leaving The Porter Wagoner Show. The song quickly became a commercial success, twice topping the Billboard Hot County Songs list. The first time was in June 1974 and again in October 1982. Only Chubby Checker had previously achieved a similar feat with the song The Twist.
Music critic Curtis W. Elison described "I Will Always Love You" as a song about a breakup that does not lead to tension in the domestic space, but attempts to show respect and gratitude for a time gone by. Dolly Parton, meanwhile, confessed that she wrote the song on the same day as another hit from her repertoire, "Jolene." The artist wanted Patti Labelle to sing the song because she sensed that the latter could do it exceptionally well. However, the singer kept putting off this moment, which she later regretted. Her version of the song was then recorded by Whitney Houston, and the single spent a record 14 weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, thus becoming one of the best-selling songs of all time. After listening to the original version, I also invite you to listen to her version Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You", let me know which version you like better.
