Another big hit and a song that will appeal to more than just metal fans. "One" is a single promoting the album ".... And Justice for All" from 1988. The song's lyrics are inspired by the American novel "Johnny Went to War"; as a result of an unfortunate incident, a man suffers an accident, is unable to accept life as a cripple and asks to be euthanized. The band wanted to show the horror and futility of war in this way. A music video was shot for the song, and it was also the first video in the band's output. The clip shows the band performing the song in a warehouse, as well as selected scenes and dialogues from the film adaptation of the aforementioned Dalton Trumbo novel Johnny Went to War from 1971.
