Music video description
"Batdance" is a song by American artist Prince, taken from the soundtrack of the 1989 film "Batman." The film enjoyed a large audience and interest, which also had a direct impact on the song's popularity. The song quickly reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts, thus becoming Prince's fourth single and his first big hit since the memorable Kiss.
"Batdance" is actually a combination of two songs into one. The combination seems a bit chaotic, with an almost mechanical dance rhythm that also reaches for a funky groove. It is a juxtaposition of many of Prince's musical ideas of the time.
The video for the song "Batdance" was directed by Albert Mangoli, while Barry Lathera is responsible for the choreography. The clip features Prince, whose face is painted as the Joker (evil) on one side and Batman (good) on the other. The artist is from under the sign of the twins, and through this unique makeup he also wanted to emphasize the duality of his music. The video earned him a nomination for the prestigious 1990 Soul Train Music Award in the Best R&B/Soul video category. The video was also nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards that same year.
