Music video description
"Wooly Bully" is a song recorded by the band Sam the Sham the Pharaons in 1965. Its author is the group's frontman Domingo "Sam" Samudio. The song was originally released on a small Memphis-based label, but the now-famous version was recorded by MGM studios. "Wooly Bully" is the band's biggest and only hit at the same time. The single was a worldwide success, selling more than three million copies and reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The hit "Wooly Bully" was also nominated for a Grammy Award, although the statuette never won. It is a reworking of the 1962 song "Hully Gully Now," which was written by Big Bo & The Arrows. The band's frontman Sam the Sham the Pharaons rewrote the lyrics, replacing the words "Hully Gully" with "Wooly Bully." He also made a few more lyrical changes. The words were difficult to understand and for their sake, some radio stations did not want to play the song. The "Wooly Bully" of the title is a creature that has two large horns and a woolly jaw.
