"Angel" is a song from the repertoire of Canadian singer Sarah McLachan, which appeared on her 1997 studio album "Surfacing." The song's lyrics tell the story of the death of Jonathan Melvoin, keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins, who overdosed on heroin in 1996.
The song "Angel" became the artist's second hit. The song reached the top five of the US Billboard 100 chart, and remained in the top ten of that chart for as many as 19 weeks. In the artist's native Canada, the song became the eighth best-selling single of 1999. In other countries, including Europe, the song didn't hit the charts until a few years after its release (in Ireland in 2002, and in Norway only in 2008).
Sarah McLachan said in an interview that writing the song "Angel" was relatively easy and took her roughly three hours. She drew inspiration from articles about drug-addicted musicians she read as part of Rolling Stone magazine. She quickly identified with the feelings that can drive people to use such substances. She wrote a text that was to treat the idea of not taking responsibility for other people's problems, while loving yourself.
