"Runaway Train" is a song from the repertoire of the rock band Soul Asylum, which was released in June 1993 as the fourth single from the album Grave Dancers Union (1992). The song was a commercial success around the world. It reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and also reached No. 1 on Canada's "RPM Top Singles" chart. The song received a gold certificate from the "Recording Industry Association of America" noting a score of 600,000 copies sold in the US. It also won a Grammy Award in 1993 in the"Best Rock Song" category.
The lyrics of the hit song "Runaway Train" deal with the experience of depression faced by the band's singer Dave Pirner. Of special note is the music video, which depicts missing people, especially young children and teenagers. Tony Kayne is responsible for its direction. Several versions of the clip have been made. The one played in the United States begins with text appearing informing how many children have gone missing from the streets of America, while the British one brings the same information, but set in the reality of the UK. Depending on the region, the music video featured information about those missing in the area. According to the team, the music video contributed to the finding of as many as 26 children. In turn, some of the stories ended in tragedy.
