"Tequila" is an instrumental song written by Chuck Rio in 1958 and recorded by the band The Champs. The song was a huge commercial success, becoming a number one hit in many countries around the world, both on the pop and R&B charts.
The hit song "Tequila" is based on the Cuban "mambo beat." The title word appears in it as many as three times, spoken from the mouth of Danny Flores, who authored the song. The song became the B-side of the single "Train to Nowhere," released by Challenge Records on January 15, 1958. The album was initially not very successful, but when interest was aroused by the song on the second side, the success became spectacular. Indeed, "Tequila" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as early as March 28, 1958.
The Champs also recorded a sequel to the hit "Te quila" titled "Too Much Tequila," which enjoyed a 30th place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2020, band leader Dave Burgess resurrected the group and, along with other musicians of The Champs, recorded 12 new songs for the album "Tequila Party." The album featured a party version of the big hit from years ago.
