The hit song "Don't Leave Me This Way" was written by Keneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Cary Gilbert and was originally released in 1975 by Harold Melvin & Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass. The song became popular when American singer Thelma Houston recorded her version in 1976.
The song "Don't Leave Me This Way" was originally intended to be included in Diana Ross' repertoire as a follow-up to her single "Love Hangover." When it was given to Thelma Houston and featured on her fourth album "Any Way You Like It" it became a huge hit. It topped the U.S. soul singles chart and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list just nine weeks later. The song also appeared on the soundtrack to the film "Looking for Mr. Goodbar," and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance in 1978.
