The song "A Thousand Miles| was an international success reaching No. 1 on the charts in Australia, Ireland, the UK and the Netherlands. The song is part of the pop music trend, where the piano is supported by a string orchestra. Vanessa Carlton said in an interview that it is a song about lost love and called it a combination of reality and fantasy.
The video was shot in Newbury Park, California, and partially in Los Angeles as well. The clip begins with a scene in which Vanessa Carlton enters a garage and discovers that there is a piano inside. She starts playing and the piano moves around outside. During these scenes, the singer passes cyclists, strollers and a parade moving through the city center, among others. In the final scene, Carlton returns to the garage, the song ends, and the woman gets up and leaves.
